Fat transfer is a procedure that combines liposuction of the waist; abdomen, back or legs with fat transfer technique using patient's own natural living fat cells.
The harvested fat can be re injected to enhance:
- Buttocks
- Calves
- Lips
- Face
Fat transfer to lips and face are consider minor procedures. Fat transfer is performed with local anesthesia and usually takes one hour. The amount of fat harvested from the donor area is minimal.
Every person has her own reasons for considering fat transfer. Improve their self image is usually one of the reasons.
Who is not a good candidate for fat transfer?
- If you are not 18 year old and emotionally mature to understand the fat transfer procedure.
- If you do not have realistic expectation about fat transfer.
- If you are pregnant, breastfeeding or have an infection any where in your body.

The fat transfer surgery
The fat transfer procedure is performed as an outpatient (no overnight stay required) in our La Jolla / San Diego certified surgery center. Dr. Ron Soltero’s office is conveniently located in the UTC / La Jolla area. Fully equipped with two AAAASF certified operating rooms, it stands out to be one of the most private and select plastic surgery offices in the San Diego area.
Fat is removed from a donor area such as abdomen, flanks and / or legs. Once removed, the fat is process to remove excess fluid and the transfer in its native form. Fat is injected through small incisions into the recipient area (lips, face, buttocks or calves)
The fat transfer procedure is often combined with liposuction and tummy tuck.
If requested by the patient it is possible for Dr. Soltero to harvest a large amount of fat to freeze and store for future injections.
After the fat transfer surgery
You will probably feel tired and sore for several days after the fat transfer operation. However within one or two days you should be up and around. The surgical area may remain swollen and sensitive for a few weeks.
